The Basi Panda Think Tank was created to celebrate and advance the extraordinary legacy of Basi—one of China’s most beloved giant pandas, a cultural ambassador whose life story continues to symbolize harmony, resilience, and the enduring bond between humanity and nature. Our distinctive logo, inspired by Basi’s gentle expression and unmistakable silhouette, serves as more than a visual identity—it is a global emblem of cultural diplomacy, biodiversity stewardship, and cross-border collaboration. A Legacy Rooted in History—and in the Heart of China Basi rose to prominence during a transformative era for Chinese cultural exchange. As the panda who inspired the mascot of the 1990 Asian Games, she became one of the first panda figures recognized and adored around the world. Her remarkable character and exceptional longevity earned her a place not only in the hearts of millions, but also in China’s national narrative as a symbol of peace and friendship. Jeff Hallstead is a Los Angeles-based media executive and sustainability innovator working at the intersection of digital strategy, impact investing, and mission-driven entrepreneurship.
He has led growth and marketing initiatives for major media brands, built advanced analytics solutions at Nielsen, Kantar, and Comscore, and scaled the DTC business at Pour Les Femmes, driving 4× revenue growth and global expansion to 50+ countries.
Jeff is Co-Founder and Board Member of SustainAble Exchange, a fintech platform enabling organizations to collaborate and contract around sustainability goals aligned with the UN SDGs.
He also serves on the Board of Directors of Grassroots Reconciliation Group (GRG) in Uganda, supporting trauma recovery, livelihoods, and reintegration for war-affected communities.
Jeff holds an MBA from USC Marshall School of Business and a BA in Foreign Affairs from the University of Virginia, with studies at Sciences Po and the Sorbonne.
